Canadian Marriage Procedure

Canadian Civil-Status Records and Prior Marriages

Canadian records can come from different provincial, territorial or court authorities. Identify the correct issuer for each record before requesting copies.

Trace the event to the issuing authority

For birth, name change, divorce or death records, write down where the relevant event was registered and which office holds the record. A document from a previous address is not necessarily issued by the province where you now live. Ask the receiving office what version it requires.

Connect marital history to the declaration

If you were previously married, the Manila mission may require certified divorce or death records for its statement-in-lieu process. Explain any difference between the name on those records and your Canadian passport. Ask about translations or authentication where a record was issued in another country.

Confirm acceptance at both stages

Consular requirements and the Philippine registrar’s checklist serve different purposes. Fulfil the requirements of each receiving office. If a prior foreign marriage raises an unresolved eligibility issue for either partner, obtain a case-specific answer before fixing travel or paying ceremony suppliers.

Before your next appointment

  • Event location and issuing authority
  • Certified prior-marriage evidence if applicable
  • Name continuity across passport and civil records
