British Marriage Procedure

British Name Changes and Previous-Marriage Evidence

A British wedding document folder may need to explain a former name, divorce or bereavement. Start by linking the events to the records that establish them.

Identify the final record

If a previous marriage ended, identify the final court or civil record that establishes its outcome. Record the jurisdiction, date and issuing authority. Ask the register office or embassy which original or certified copy it needs and ask the Philippine registrar its own question about acceptance.

Connect the names on your records

A name on a divorce order or birth record may differ from the current passport name. Put the records in sequence and identify the document explaining each change. Ask whether a deed, marriage record or other connecting evidence is required in your circumstances. Do not alter documents to make names look identical.

Resolve international questions early

If a record was issued outside the UK, the format or legal effect may require additional advice. Likewise, a Filipino partner’s previous marriage may raise a separate recognition question. Clarify the point before booking a consular appointment, ceremony or non-refundable travel.
