Australian Marriage Procedure

Australian Divorce, Death and Identity Records for Marriage

If an Australian applicant has previously been married, prepare the evidence relevant to the end of that marriage before the consular and local application stages.

Prepare the correct final evidence

The Australian Embassy Manila identifies final divorce evidence for divorced applicants and a death certificate where a spouse has died. Identify the issuing court or registry before requesting a copy. Ask the embassy what it accepts when the event took place outside Australia.

Review foreign-issued records

Different languages, formats and jurisdictions can affect the instructions you receive. Ask whether a translation or authentication is needed, and which authority must provide it. Keep the answer with the related record so you can explain the document trail to the next receiving office.

Resolve an eligibility question before booking

If the effect of a past marriage remains unclear for either partner, obtain official or qualified case-specific guidance. A coordinator can organize the records and questions but cannot determine the legal effect of a decree. Keep your ceremony date flexible until the issue is resolved.

Before your next appointment

  • Final divorce order or applicable death record
  • Name and identity links to the current passport
  • Instructions for records issued outside Australia
